The Learning Center of North Arkansas is celebrating its 50 years of providing quality services to individuals with disabilities. On Wednesday, Dec. 4, TLCNA will host a celebration from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at TLCNA Administration Office at 301 W. Trimble Ave. in Berryville.
In December of 1974 a group of concerned individuals and business owners in Carroll County recognized a need for quality services for individuals with disabilities. Therefore, they decided to create The Carroll County Learning Center. They filed to operate as a nonprofit organization and began operation in the basement of the local Methodist Church. Eventually, the Berryville Public Schools deeded land to The Learning Center. Through donations and volunteers, a building was created.
The Learning Center began with several children and adults with a staff of two, and now it continues to grow. Because of the expansion of services to other counties, the name was changed to The Learning Center of North Arkansas in 2015. Today TLCNA has more than 160 employees and provides services to more than 500 individuals in Carroll, Madison, Newton, Boone, and Marion counties.
The board of directors is a mix of community leaders and parents or family members of people with disabilities. They serve without compensation yet provide leadership, dedication and passion for the success of The Learning Center and its mission.
Its mission is to provide a wider variety of services to the residents of the state of Arkansas. TLCNA continues to prepare for the future with longrange goals of building larger enrollment, especially in services to those with disabilities. TLCNA also provides the East View Apartments in Green Forest, which is a 32-unit multifamily complex, and West View Apartments in Berryville, which is a 14-unit complex for the elderly and people with disabilities. The center focuses on continuous development of the individual’s ongoing social, emotional, behavioral, and educational needs.
The Learning Center of North Arkansas provides adult day habilitation as well as housing opportunities for disabled adults. TLCNA has recently experienced tremendous growth in its childcare and preschool services for children six weeks to 5 years of age. Within the childcare facilities, a child can receive therapy for any delays in development. Children are provided with therapy services while attending the center. The goal is to help children achieve meaningful progress in their development. From a wide range of developmental, sensory, motor, and communication services, the therapists work to unlock the potential of each child. Additionally, certified teachers supervise trained paraprofessionals and write individualized program plans to help remediate deficit areas. The ultimate goal is kindergarten readiness.
The success of The Learning Center of North Arkansas has been, in part, because of the support of the community and business leaders. They also have many staff members with over 20+ years of service. Teamwork is a huge part of the centers’ growth and success along with a dedicated board of directors.
The public is invited to attend the celebration on Wednesday, Dec. 4.
