The Green Forest Lady Tigers exacted a measure of revenge in the consolation bracket of the annual Green Forest Holiday Tournament, erasing a big third-quarter deficit and beating the Berryville Lady Bobcats 63-58 on Thursday, Dec. 8, at the Grim Gym.
Berryville closed the first half with a 13-2 run to take a 35-24 lead at intermission. The Lady Bobcats extended their lead to 40-26 early in the third quarter before Green Forest began its comeback.
The Lady Tigers outscored Berryville 15-7 to cut the deficit to 47-41 by the end of the quarter.
Green Forest took control in the fourth quarter, outscoring Berryville 22-11 to clinch its first victory over the Lady Bobcats in more than a decade.
“We got in foul trouble,” Berryville coach Daniel Cornelison said. “We had a couple of key girls get in foul trouble, and we had one foul out. We can’t have foulouts. It is what it is. We’re not making excuses, but when you don’t have some of your players there that are pretty important to you, it’s pretty hard to do what we want to do. But we’ve still got to play better than that. You’ve got to tip your cap to Green Forest. They did a lot of good stuff.”
The Lady Tigers’ second- half comeback was led by sophomore Lydia Russell, who scored 16 of her 19 points in the second half, and sophomore Kayla Lozano, who scored 15 points in the second half and 17 altogether. Sophomore Alivia Norris scored 11 points in the first half to help keep Green Forest within striking distance. She finished with 13 points.
Senior Hannah Youngblood led Berryville with 16 points, while freshman Kaylyn Smith added 15. Senior Mia Thurman and sophomore Kynadee Hopper added 12 points apiece for the Lady Bobcats.
With the victory, Green Forest advanced to the tournament’s third-place game, where the Lady Tigers beat Lead Hill 47-40 on Saturday, Dec. 10. Senior guard Gina Gonzales led Green Forest with 16 points while Norris and Kayla Lozano added nine points apiece.
Green Forest had a bye in the first round, then lost to Kingston 36-31 on Wednesday, Dec. 7.
Berryville lost its first-round game to Omaha 41-19 on Monday, Dec. 5. Youngblood led the Lady Bobcats with 13 points in that game as the Lady Bobcats played without two key players because of illness and a family emergency.
Green Forest will play at Lincoln on Tuesday night before hosting West Fork on Friday night. Berryville travels to Blue Eye on Tuesday before playing at home Friday night against Farmington.
