Lady Highlanders picking up steam

Posted

With several key players sidelined early in the season, the Eureka Springs Lady Highlanders got off to a slow start.

But they’re making up for that now. The Lady Highlanders won for the fifth time in their past six games on Monday, Nov. 13, beating Haas Hall Academy of Bentonville 54-14 in the first round of the Decatur tournament. That followed a 36-24 homecoming victory over Union Christian Academy on Friday, Nov. 10, when the Lady Highlanders rallied from a big early deficit.

“Halfway through the second quarter, it was 15-1,” Eureka Springs coach Kyle Farrar said. “It was about as bad as we could shoot and play for a quarter and a half. Once we got past that, it was pretty good.”

Farrar said senior guard Brandessa Armer, a four-year starter, is leading the way for the Lady Highlanders.

“Brandessa has played really well,” Farrar said. “She’s scored the ball and she’s rebounded it really well. She’s averaging almost nine (rebounds) a game. For her size (5-6) that’s really good.”

Sophomore Yaretsi Tapia has returned from an injury to give Eureka Springs a boost, as well.

“She’s played really well,” Farrar said. “She gives us a spark.”

Another sophomore, Estella Yang, has been a consistent scorer, Farrar said.

“Our best players are getting back,” he said. “So we’re starting to get back in the groove and we’ll see how we go from here.”
