Berryville volleyball coach Kristin Whetham calls her team a work in progress. To win, Whetham says, the Lady Bobcats have to play with enthusiasm and intensity.
When that enthusiasm and intensity wanes, Berryville can run into trouble. That was the case on Sept. 6, when the Lady Bobcats allowed Huntsville to come from down a set to hand Berryville its first loss of the season.
The Lady Bobcats won the first set 25-23, but Huntsville took the next three sets by scores of 2516, 25-17 and 25-23.
“We played really well and won that first set,” Whetham said. “Then the girls kind of got a little relaxed and just didn’t seem to play with very much energy or intensity the second two sets.”
Berryville regained its focus in the fourth set but Huntsville pulled out the victory.
On Thursday, Sept. 8, Berryville traveled to Gravette and lost in straight sets 25-19, 25-15 and 2513.
“Gravette’s a really good team,” Whetham said, pointing out the Lady Lions’ size at the net. “They’re going to be a team to beat this year.”
Still, Whetham said the Lady Bobcats played well.
“We came out with a game plan and we executed that game plan perfectly,” she said. “Yeah, I’m disappointed not to win, but I was happy to see that they came out and fought and gave it all they had.”
Tatiana Emerson had 12 kills in the two games, while Kynadee Hopper added 11. Mercy Leviticus had 44 digs and Mia Thurman had 22 assists.
Berryville hosted Bergman on Monday at Bobcat Gym. The Lady Bobcats will host Pea Ridge on Tuesday and Prairie Grove on Thursday.
