The 2022 volleyball season has only just begun, but the Berryville Lady Bobcats have already demonstrated one important trait: They aren’t about to back down from a challenge.
The Class 4A Lady Bobcats opened their season with a big victory on Tuesday, Aug. 23, rallying to beat Class 6A Springdale in five sets on the Lady Bulldogs’ home floor.
Berryville won 25-23, 26-28, 22-25, 25-15 and 18-16.
Berryville coach Kristin Whetham said the Lady Bobcats learned a great deal from a loss to Rogers in a benefit game a week earlier.
“We spent a lot of time in practice going over, just one by one, things that needed to be fixed,” Whetham said. “And we just talked about being more disciplined in the things we do. I told them, we’re not just a powerful, powerful team. We have got to play with a little bit of grit and a little bit of fire and enthusiasm. We’re going to have to play five sets, so we’re going to have to be in shape. We’re going to have to work harder in practice so that when we get to that fifth set, we can pull it out.”
Whetham said all the Lady Bobcats played well, but a few stood out.
“Tatiana Emerson had a heck of a game, just dominated the net offensively,” Whetham said. “Our setters, Mia Thurman and Addie Ashford, stepped up and got the ball where it needed to be. And Kynadee Hopper, who’s a sophomore, she came on really strong. She had quite a few blocks and just played smart.”
Berryville will play at Gentry on Tuesday, Aug. 30.
