Lady Bobcats rally past Huntsville

Posted

The Berryville Lady Bobcats couldn’t generate much offense in the first half against Huntsville on Homecoming night at Bobcat Arena on Friday, Jan. 26.

They made up for it in the second half, however.

The Lady Bobcats scored 32 points in the second half and defeated Huntsville 43-29.

“It was about as ugly a first half as you can have,” said Berryville coach Daniel Cornelison, whose team trailed 15-11 at halftime after scoring just two points in the second quarter. “Second half, we made adjustments offensively.”

The Lady Bobcats had their hands full early against an aggressive, physical Huntsville defense.

“They run that 1-2-2 kind of matchup (zone),” Cornelison said. “They kind of gave us fits with their length and stuff. But once we started attacking it better, we had a little more success against it.”

In the second half, it was Berryville’s defense that controlled the game. The Lady Bobcats outscored Huntsville 10-3 in the third quarter to take the lead, then put up 22 points in the fourth quarter to turn a close game into a 14-point win.

“I thought our kids played real hard,” Cornelison said. “We guarded really hard and created the turnovers like we needed to.”

With no seniors and just three juniors on the roster, Berryville relies heavily on a talented sophomore class. Several times during the win over Huntsville, the Lady Bobcats had five freshmen on the floor.

“It’s just a matter of just really getting used to the high school style of play and the physicality of it all,” Cornelison said of the challenge for Berryville’s young players. “Once we get a little more mature, I believe you’ll start to see better things from them. And you can see the potential there.”

Sophomore Kaylyn Smith led Berryville with 18 points, including nine in the fourth quarter.

Berryville will travel to Prairie Grove on Tuesday, Jan. 30, before hosting Pea Ridge on Friday, Feb. 2, at Bobcat Arena.
