Lady Bobcats open postseason

Posted

The Berryville Lady Bobcats opened postseason play Monday, Oct. 16, taking on Clarksville in the first round of the 4A-Northwest District Tournament at Huntsville.

The game was played after the final deadline for this edition of the Carroll County News.

Berryville went into the district tournament off back-to-back losses to Pea Ridge and Gravette, but coach Kristin Whetham said the Lady Bobcats were competitive against a talented Gravette team.

“We could have played better against Pea Ridge,” Whetham said. “Chalk it up to Senior Night, I guess. I’m not sure. We just came out and kind of looked like the old team from the beginning of the season. But then we go to Gravette, and Gravette’s a really good team and we played well against them. I mean, we were right there with them.

“Obviously it’s going to be hard to beat a team like Gravette. It’s going to be hard to beat a team like Shiloh Christian because they just have so many more offensive players than we have. But defensively, I thought we stopped as many balls as we could. We’re not hurting ourselves as much on serve receive anymore.”

Berryville’s top offensive threat has been junior Kynadee Hopper with more than 100 kills. Senior Kylie Campbell also has topped 100 kills, while sophomore Paige Thurman has tallied more than 90.

“Paige has really kind of surprised me this year in the front row,” Whetham said. “She’s very powerful. She kind of has a different gear in her.”

Sophomore libero Hannah Campbell has earned praise from Whetham over the past several weeks.

“Some of the balls that she digs out, it’s just amazing,” Whetham said.
