Longtime Berryville volleyball coach Kristin Whetham tried something new with the Lady Bocbats this summer, and she’s been pleased with the results.
“This year is the first year that I actually didn’t do anything in June with the girls,” Whetham said. “I think everybody kind of needed a reset, so we reset. We came back in July 11, and have been going strong since.”
The Lady Bobcats struggled at times last season but gained valuable experience by playing several freshmen and sophomores. Berryville will get a boost this season with the return of senior Hannah Youngblood, a standout athlete who hadn’t played volleyball since junior high.
“She’s come in with a great attitude and worked hard,” Whetham said. “She’s going to help us.”
Sophomore Kynadee Hopper will start at middle for the Lady Bobcats, and Whetham said sophomore Addy Ashford will step in for classmate Taelor Tomlinson, who is lost for the season to a torn ACL.
“I think we have a good blend of girls this year,” Whetham said. “We’re not going to be just all hitters and no defense. I’ve got some height and I’ve got some little quick girls.”
The Lady Bobcats got some extra help over the summer when four coaches from Midwest Volleyball Performance in Topeka, Kan., visited for a three-day clinic.
“They have a bunch of coaches that played pro ball overseas,” Whetham said. “I had about four of those guys come in and run a clinic for me for three days. It just helps, because I’m the only coach they really hear. So it helps having somebody else come in, and basically repeating the same things that I’ve said. But, when it comes from somebody else, they’re like ‘OK, oh yeah, we get it!’ So we’re really only on our second week of fall practice because we took that week and did that. So I’m excited!”
The Lady Bobcats will host Rogers in a benefit match on Aug. 18 before opening the regular season on the road against Springdale on Aug. 23.
