The Berryville Lady Bobcats opened their 2024-25 basketball season with a blowout victory on Tuesday, Nov. 12, beating Haas Hall Fayetteville 68-7 at Bobcat Arena.
Two nights later, the Lady Bobcats ran into significantly more resistance but held on to win on the road at Cotter, 43-39.
Eleven players scored at least two points in the victory over Haas Hall, led by 11 from junior Chaney Fairweather. Juniors Kaylyn Smith and Tessa Johnson added nine points each, while junior Hailey Howerton and senior Taelor Tomlinson each scored eight for the Lady Bobcats, who led 23-0 at the end of the first quarter and 42-4 at halftime.
Things were much closer against Cotter as the Lady Bobcats led 19-18 at halftime and 34-29 after three quarters before holding on down the stretch. Howerton led Berryville with 13 points, while Smith scored 11 — all in the second half.
Before the season opener, Berryville coach Daniel Cornelison said the Lady Bobcats will lean heavily on their guard play. Smith is a three-year starter and junior Paige Thurman is in her second season as Berryville’s starting point guard.
“We don’t have a lot of size at all. We’re going to rely a lot on our guard play and pressure and trying like crazy to put us in advantage situations based on the personnel we have,” Cornelison said.
While the Lady Bobcats don’t have a lot of size on the inside, they don’t lack for experience. Berryville didn’t have a single senior on the roster last season.
“We’ve got pretty much everybody back from last year and they’re working hard and have a great attitude in practice,” Cornelison said. “We’re excited about it.
