Lady Bobcats look to bounce back

The Berryville Lady Bobcats lost a pair of conference volleyball matches on consecutive nights last week, giving themselves less margin for error as they try to secure the No. 3 seed in the upcoming district tournament, but it wasn’t all bad news for Berryville.

Longtime Lady Bobcats coach Kristin Whetham said her team played very well in a home loss to a talented Gravette team on Tuesday, Sept. 24.

“We played probably the best volleyball I’ve seen us play as a whole against Gravette,” Whetham said. “Now, we lost, but Gravette’s No. 2 (in the conference standings, behind Prairie Grove), and I honestly don’t know they’re No. 2. I would pick them as the No. 1.”

Gravette defeated Berryville 25-17, 2628, 25-20 and 25-19.

“We took a set from them, and we should have taken two sets off of them. We played outstanding.”

The loss to Gravette followed a loss at Huntsville one night earlier. The Lady Eagles defeated Berryville 25-23, 22-25, 25-22 and 25-21. “We hadn’t had a road game in so long that I definitely think that played a part in that loss,” Whetham said. “Plus, Huntsville is our rival and we never go to Huntsville and play great.”

Berryville traveled to Pea Ridge on Monday, Sept. 30. The Lady Bobcats will host Prairie Grove on Tuesday, Oct. 1.

“This is a big one,” Whetham said of the Pea Ridge matchup. “If we win this one, we’re definitely looking at the third seed. But if we lose, then it’s a toss-up between us, Huntsville and Pea Ridge. So this is a big game for us. We’ve got to come out ready to play.”
