The first time the Berryville Lady Bobcats faced Huntsville this season, the Lady Eagles used their size advantage to bully the Lady Bobcats close to the basket and take a 10-point victory at Bobcat Arena.
The rematch, played Friday, Jan. 27, in Huntsville, was a different story.
With the tempo more to their liking, the Lady Bobcats jumped out to a nine-point halftime lead and then held on for a 62-60 victory.
“We made a few adjustments from the first time we played them, offensively and defensively,” Berryville coach Daniel Cornelison said. “We really tried to play to our strengths more than we did the first time we played them. They had a hard time guarding it and the kids executed it really well. Defensively we tried to speed the game up ad get more pressure on them to create more opportunities for us.”
Senior guard Hannah Youngblood scored 16 of her team-high 24 points in the first half as the Lady Bobcats jumped out to a 36-27 lead. Freshman Kaylin Smith added 18 points for Berryville, scoring nine in each half. And sophomore Taelor Tomlinson, who missed most of the first half of the season recovering from a torn ACL, made four three-pointers and contributed 16 points for the Lady Bobcats.
Two of Tomlinson’s three-pointers came in the fourth quarter as Berryville clung to a slim lead. Senior Mia Thurman, who scored four points, gave the Lady Bobcats their winning margin when she made a pair of free throws.
Huntsville’s final possession ended in a long shot that missed the mark as Berryville held on.
“The kids made shots,” Cornelian said. “I was really proud of their effort. They played hard and this is just a really good road win for us.”
Berryville was scheduled to host Prairie Grove on Tuesday, but the game was postponed because of inclement weather. Athletic director Brent Compton said Tuesday afternoon that the game might be played Thursday.
Berryville will travel to Pea Ridge on Friday before hosting Gravette on Tuesday, Jan. 7, at Bobcat Arena.
