Lady Bobcats face familiar opponent in 1st round of regional

Posted

The Berryville Lady Bobcats are headed back to the regional tournament, and their first-round opponent is a familiar one.

Berryville will face Waldron at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 26, at Prairie Grove. The winner will advance to the regional semifinals and earn a spot in next week’s state tournament in Morrilton.

Berryville beat Waldron 50-37 in the first round of the 2025 regional at Dardanelle, outscoring the Bulldogs 17-4 in the fourth quarter to secure the win.

“They’ve got some nice players,” Berryville coach Daniel Cornelison said. “We’re going to have to come ready to play.”

Berryville (22-9) advanced to the regional by defeating Prairie Grove 4645 in the first round of the 4A-1 District Tournament on Tuesday, Feb. 17, at Shiloh Christian in Springdale. The Lady Bobcats hung on after Prairie Grove, trailing by three, opted for a twopoint basket in the closing seconds.

It was Berryville’s third win over the Lady Tigers this season, but the degree of difficulty was enhanced by the return of Prairie Grove’s top player, who missed the first two meetings with an injury.

“That was a big one,” Cornelison said. “It wasn’t easy. We had to play our tail off. Prairie Grove is significantly better with their guard back.”

Senior Hailey Howerton led Berryville with 13 points and classmate Chaney Fairweather added 12. Another Lady Bobcats senior, Paige Thurman, scored Berryville’s final two points from the freethrow line.

That victory moved the Lady Bobcats into the district semifinals on Friday, Feb. 20, against Pea Ridge. The Lady Blackhawks held off Berryville in a tightly contested game, winning 37-34.

“I was really proud of our effort defensively and rebounding the ball, some things that we really focused on, having to do better against them,” Cornelison said. “And I thought we just played our little tails off defensively. But a few shots just didn’t go in the basket. That’s kind of the tale of the game right there. We got some good looks and the ball just didn’t t go in the basket for us.”

Fairweather scored 11 points to lead the Lady Bobcats. Freshman post Ellie Asbury added 10.
