Lady Bobcats’ defense clamps down against Gravette

Posted

The Berryville Lady Bobcats turned a tight game into a blowout against the Gravette Lady Lions.

The Lady Bobcats held Gravette scoreless for approximately a quarter and a half and turned a two-point lead into a 55-34 victory on Tuesday, Jan. 7, at Bobcat Arena.

Berryville led 1210 midway through the first quarter before reeling off a 13-0 run to finish the first half.

Senior Taelor Tomlinson started the run for the Lady Bobcats when she made the first of two free throws with 2:06 left in the first quarter for a 1310 lead.

After a Gravette turnover, Tomlinson hit a deep three-pointer from the left wing at the 1:47 mark, then a bucket by junior Chaney Fairweather made it 18-10.

Things got worse from there for Gravette, as the Lady Lions’ bench was hit with a technical foul. Tomlinson made the second of two free throws after the technical, then Kaylyn Smith drove for a basket with nine seconds left in the quarter to make it 2110.

Neither team generated much offense in the second quarter, but Berryville got enough to add to its lead. Senior Kynadee Hopper converted a fast-break layup despite being fouled and Smith passed to classmate Tessa Johnson for another transition basket to give the Lady Bobcats a 25-10 lead that they took into halftime as Gravette went scoreless in the second quarter.

The Lady Lions got a layup to start the third-quarter scoring, but Berryville responded with eight consecutive points, capped by junior Paige Thurman’s three-pointer after a Gravette turnover against the Lady Bobcats’ press. After a Gravette basket, Thurman hit another three from the right corner to push Berryville’s lead to 36-14.

Gravette got within 12, at 39-27, early in the fourth quarter before Tomlinson scored seven consecutive points, highlighted by a three-pointer from the top of the key after a kickout pass from Hopper.

Gravette got back within 14 before Berryville finished the game with a 9-2 run.

Smith scored 14 points and Tomlinson added 13 to lead Berryville.

Berryville will host Huntsville on Tuesday, Jan. 14, at Bobcat Arena before traveling to Gentry on Friday, Jan. 17.

The Lady Bobcats’ game at Green Forest, originally scheduled for Friday, Jan. 10, was postponed because of winter weather. It will be played Wednesday, Jan. 15, at the Grim Gym.
