Jack C. Howerton, a resident of Berryville, Arkansas, was born February 5, 1941, in Rudd, Arkansas, a son of Clyde and Mattie (Webb) Howerton. He departed this life Tuesday, September 26, 2023, in Berryville at the age of 82. As Jack would say, he “didn’t look a day over 90!”
Jack attended Rudd Central school in his childhood and always claimed Rudd as his original hometown. Jack joined the Army Reserves in 1966 and served proudly for 5 years. He married the love of his life, Sue (Jackson) Howerton on April 16, 1965. A loyal employee and hard worker, Jack held several jobs around Berryville throughout his life, starting out at the Carroll County Newspaper and Braswell Printing. He later transitioned into the chicken farming business (“You smell that? Smells like money!” he’d always say), first transporting and later raising chickens on his farm just south of Berryville, until he retired around 2005.
He is survived by his two children, Mark Howerton and Kim Ray; his four beloved grandchildren, Drew Howerton, Aaron Wisdom, Morgan Ray and Adam Ray; his niece, Leigh Ann Howerton; his dear cat, Star; and a host of other friends and relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Sue Howerton; his brother, Jay; and his son-in-law, Tony Ray.
In his younger days, Jack loved riding “hot rods” with his brother and friends. Later on, he enjoyed playing games such as Moon and Owl, tinkering with his old pickup trucks and other toys on his farm, riding around on his four-wheeler, and spending time with his grandkids. Having become an avid Facebook user in the past decade, Jack always enjoyed catching up with old and new friends alike and commenting eagle emojis on his loved ones’ posts. Jack was known around town for his lighthearted sense of humor. Whether he was answering the phone with a joke, asking waiters if it was “free day,” or spending more time talking than exercising at the Community Center, he was sure to bring a smile to your face with every interaction.
