It’s time for Holiday Hoops!

Posted

The final week in December usually means one thing for local basketball fans: It’s time for the annual CS Bank Holiday Hoops Tournament at Berryville’s Bobcat Arena.

And it’s that time again, as the 13th edition of the tournament will tip off Wednesday at the arena. A total of 16 boys and girls teams are participating, with 24 games scheduled over three days.

“I believe this year could be the best tournament field that we’ve put together,” Berryville boys coach and athletic director Brent Compton said. “There’s six conferences in Class 4A and we have one team coming in from each conference in both boys and girls.”

Berryville, Arkadelphia, Fordyce, Fountain Lake, Heber Springs, Monticello and Pocahontas each will be competing in both the boys and girls divisions. Sloan Hendrix will play in the boys division while Crane, Mo., plays in the girls division.

“It’s just a super field, and it’s going to be fun for our community and good for our community with all the people coming in and having a great event,” Compton said. “I think it’s something people look forward to every year.”

Compton and the Bobcats will come into the tournament on a winning note after defeating Shiloh Christian 66-51 on Tuesday, Dec. 20 — Compton’s birthday.

Berryville led 14-5 at the end of the first quarter and 3418 at halftime as the Bobcats (11-2 overall) bounced back from a loss to Farmington to even their 4A-1 mark at 1-1.

“It was a nice win,” Compton said. Senior forward Jake Wilson led the Bobcats with 18 points, including 10 from the free-throw line. Senior point guard Nate Allen, who had missed two games with an injury, added 15 and senior guard D.J. Colbert had 12.

“Nate got to play,” Compton said. “It was kind of a that-day decision. We put him through some things during the day and he said he felt well enough to play. We were going into it with limited minutes in mind. He probably played more than what we anticipated, but he felt good and he played real well. I think he was glad to get back out there.”

The Bobcats will face Fordyce in the first round of the tournament, with tipoff expected around 7:20 p.m. Wednesday. A win could set up a rematch with Arkadelphia. The Bobcats and Badgers played in the first round of last season’s Class 4A state tournament in Magnolia, with Berryville erasing a 14-point second-half deficit to win 55-52 in overtime. The Bobcats went on to reach the state semifinals.
