It’s a busy month

Posted

I’m continually amazed by the amount of numbers and the number of events there are here in Carroll County. September seems to be especially busy, with Agri Days in Green Forest, the Berryville Film Festival, Jeep Jam in Eureka Springs, Pioneer Days in Berryville and the annual induction ceremony for the Berryville Athletic Hall of Fame.

The latter two events are this coming weekend, with Pioneer Days on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 19 and 20, the Hall of Fame ceremony set for Saturday morning.

Did I mention that Friday is also Homecoming night for the undefeated Berryville Bobcats? In addition to Homecoming ceremonies, the 2025 Hall of Fame class also will be honored during Friday night’s game at Bobcat Stadium.

It’s enough to keep a small newspaper editor plenty busy, but it’s a lot of fun.

I’d like to tip my cap to a couple of friends. First, congratulations to Julia Borkowski for another successful year with the Berryville Film Festival. I was under the weather last Friday and didn’t make it to any of the screenings, but I was there for the awards ceremony Saturday night. The work that Julia has done to promote Berryville has been simply outstanding, and that was evident by the crowd at Saturday’s awards.

Next there’s Dean Lee, who will be among the five Hall of Fame inductees this weekend. Over the past few years, I’ve gotten to know Dean both in our official capacities and as fellow members of the Berryville Rotary Club. Any conversation with Dean is always enjoyable. I only hate that I didn’t get to watch Dean the athlete in action — although rumor is he still swings a golf club fairly well.

Dean is profiled on Page 2B of this week’s paper. There’s even a photo of Dean with longtime Arkansas basketball coach Eddie Sutton — or at least I’m told that’s Dean. He’s difficult to recognize with all that hair!

I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention something else in this week’s paper: On Pages 3B-7B, you’ll find a list of winners from the annual Carroll County Livestock Show and photos from the Premium Sale. I didn’t grow up around agriculture, so I always feel a little lost when I venture out to the Fairgrounds, but you can’t help but be impressed by these local youngsters and the hard work they put in caring for their animals. Special thanks to Clayton and Kristin Whittmore and Halle Pullen for their help in putting together the list of show winners and photos, and to the advertisers who sponsored those pages.
