The Berryville and Green Forest libraries have teamed up to present the “Soy Super / I’m Super” national traveling exhibit in Carroll County.
The exhibit allows people of all ages, but especially tweens, to explore the benefits and applications of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math (STEAM) in our lives. Specific stations focus on learning about the superpowers hidden in our brains and bodies and die super futures that can be created for those young people choosing to pursue a STEAM career.
The “Soy Super / I’m Super” exhibit is offered as part of the STAR Net STEAM Equity Project. The BenyviUe Library is one of just 12 libraries nationwide selected to participate in this project. Canoll County will be the only place this national exhibit can be viewed in Arkansas.
The exhibit features eight interactive stations: four located at the Berryville Library and four at the Green Forest Library. The exhibit is written in both English and Spanish and is free to view at any time the libraries are open. The exhibit will be on display through Oct. 20.
The libraries have created a special Soy Super / I’m Super Challenge, offering a prize for those ages 8 to 12 who sign up in advance and complete at least five of the eight interactive stations. Tackling the challenge is a perfect way for families, youth groups and school classes to experience the exhibit.
In BenyviUe, participants can stretch their mental skills with a fast-paced quiz game and use technology and science tools to explore STEAM careers. Participants also can take a career aptitude test and start to design their own super future as well as leam all about brain anatomy by taking apart a life-size model of a human brain.
In Green Forest, a special Discovery table is set up that allows participants to explore how their bodies work, particularly their eyes, hearts and nervous systems. Participants can also test their knowledge of all the bones in our bodies as they try to piece together a model skeleton and listen to the sound of their own hearts beating in their bodies.
“We are having so much fun with this exhibit and it is wonderful that an exhibit of this magnitude is being offered right here in Canoll County,” said Jennifer Geeo, assistant librarian at die Berryville Library. “You would expect to find an exhibit of this nature located in a larger city.”
The STAR Net STEAM Equity Project is offered by the National Center for Interactive Learning at the Space Science Institute, the American Library Association, Twin Cities PBS , Institute for Learning Innovation and Education Development Center , with funding from the National Science Foundation.
