Hutson leaving Berryville after two seasons

Posted

The Berryville Bobcats will have a new head football coach next fall.

Bryan Hutson, who has served as Berryville’s head coach the past two seasons, confirmed last week that he is stepping down to accept a teaching position in the Hot Springs Lakeside School District.

“I’m going to hang up the old whistle, I think,” Hutson said. “I’m going to teach a little bit. I’m going to teach math.”

Hutson, whose Berryville teams compiled an overall record of 4-16, said the move is motivated by a desire to get closer to family.

“My whole family’s in Hot Springs,” he said. “I mean, my entire family, and my parents are moving down there, too. We have an opportunity to be around family, and that’s what my wife and I have decided we’re going to do.”

Still, Hutson said leaving Berryville will be difficult.

“It should have been an easy decision, but, man, it’s tough,” he said. “I really like Berryville. I like the kids. Everything has been fantastic. So it’s definitely nothing about Berryville that’s made this decision. It’s just a family decision. My wife was part of that decision-making process as well.”

Hutson was hired as the Bobcats’ head coach in the spring of 2021, filling the spot left vacant by the resignation of his predecessor, Doug Shott. Hutson’s successor will become Berryville’s sixth head coach since the beginning of the 2010 season.

Berryville superintendent Owen Powell said Hutson’s planned departure took him by surprise.

“It was kind of a shock to me,” Powell said. “He’s been working hard and he’s made gains with our students. But it was a family decision and a person has to understand that. I hate to see him go.”

Powell said the district has begun advertising for a new head coach and had received 23 applications by Monday afternoon. The initial pool of applicants will be narrowed down before interviews are scheduled, Powell said.

Powell said he doesn’t anticipate a new coach being hired before spring practice next month.

“I think that would be a stretch,” he said. “It would be nice, but I don’t think there’s enough time to get someone in here that soon.”
