You’d be hard-pressed to find anyone who wouldn’t agree that Green Forest’s matchup with Huntsville on Friday, Oct. 28, at Tiger Stadium was one of the most entertaining high school football games of the season.
Unfortunately for the Tigers, it was just a little more entertaining for Huntsville.
The Eagles converted a pair of twopoint conversions in the fourth quarter that proved to be the difference in a 4541 victory for Huntsville.
“I wish we could find ways to play like that earlier in the year and then build on it, instead of waiting until this time in the season, but it was a good one,” Green Forest coach Greg Tibbitt said. “Our kids played hard.”
Ridge Swofford’s 1-yard touchdown run — Swofford’s fourth TD of the game — and Jesus Romero Castillo’s extra-point kick tied the score at 29-29 with 3:21 left in the third quarter.
Huntsville broke the tie less than a minute into the fourth quarter with a 25-yard touchdown pass, then threw for the two-point conversion to take a 3729 lead.
Green Forest answered with a 12yard TD run by quarterback Isaiah Fraga to cut Huntsville’s advantage to 3735 with 7:04 left in the game, but Fraga was sacked on the two-point try.
With 4:33 left, Huntsville completed a 36-yard touchdown pass, then threw for the two-point conversion again to extend its lead to 45-35.
Green Forest wasn’t finished though. Facing fourth-and-8 from the Huntsville 32, Fraga fired a touchdown pass to Joel Salgado to pull the Tigers within four at 45-41 with 48.9 seconds remaining. But a two-point conversion try fell incomplete and Huntsville recovered Green Forest’s onside kick and ran out the clock.
Swofford scored three touchdowns in the first half, on runs of 1 and 3 yards and a 26-yard catch and run after a short pass from Fraga. He also ran for a twopoint conversion.
Swofford ran for 134 yards and three touchdowns on 30 carries and caught a touchdown pass.
“He’s going to be a good one, I feel like,” Tibbitt said. “He’s just a sophomore. You kind of forget about that with some of the games he’s had this year.”
Swofford’s 3-yard touchdown run and Fraga’s two-point conversion pass to Salgado with 3:38 left in the second quarter staked the Tigers to a 22-21 halftime lead.
Green Forest got the ball to start the second half, but an interception gave Huntsville possession inside Green Forest territory, and the Eagles capitalized with a touchdown and two-point conversion to take a 29-22 lead.
“We turned the ball over coming out of half, and instead of them chasing points, it was us chasing points,” Tibbitt said. “I think that was a little bit of a difference.”
Green Forest (1-8, 0-6 4A-1) will travel to Berryville on Friday, Nov. 4, for the annual Carroll County Super Bowl.
