For the first time in more than a decade, the city of Berryville has a new fire chief.
The Berryville City Council voted unanimously at its regular meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 15, to confirm Mayor Tim McKinney’s appointment of Matt Hunnicutt as the new chief. McKinney then administered the oath of office to Hunnicutt.
Hunnicutt succeeds former chief Shannon Chester, who retired Oct. 1 after 11 years as chief and 32 years with the fire department.
Also at the Oct. 15 meeting, McKinney signed a proclamation designating Oct. 20-26 as Friends of Libraries Week in the city, thanking the Friends of the Berryville Library for their efforts to improve the library.
Berryville Police Chief Robert Bartos presented his department’s monthly activity report for September. Berryville police wrote 76 citations in September, down from 102 in September 2023. Those included 19 citations for speeding and 14 for no driver’s license. There were 64 offenses reported, a decrease from 75 the previous year. The department had a clearance rate of 81 percent for the month and took in $905 in fines and bonds. Bartos reported that there were 17 accidents reported in September, an increase from 12 in 2023.
The monthly report for Saunders Museum showed 100 adults and two children visited the museum in September, down from 230 adults and five children in September 2023. The museum deposited $636 for the month, down from $1,303 the previous year.
The council also voted to authorize McKinney to sign a contract extension for management of the city’s wastewater treatment plant with CH2M Hill/Jacobs for calendar year 2025.
The council approved two requests to place banners on the public square, one for an upcoming benefit rodeo to be held at the Carroll County Fairgrounds on Oct. 6 and the other for the upcoming Christmas Gifts Galore event presented by the Extension Homemakers Club Country Chicks.
The council also approved a resolution declaring a structure at 206 Pritchard St. a nuisance and condemning the structure.
The council also was introduced to Aubrey Lee, a member of the newly appointed Berryville Youth Advisory Council.
The next regular meeting of the Berryville City Council is scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 5, at City Hall.
