The Holiday Island Rotary Club is sponsoring a virtual fundraiser to observe World Polio Day on Monday, Oct. 24, according to Jerry Pittman, club president.
The Holiday Island Rotary Club has set aside the entire week of Oct. 24-31to raise funds as part of Rotary International’s effort. Any donation will be matched up to $5,000 by the club and an additional match will come from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation that has partnered with Rotary for many years on this project to help eliminate polio worldwide.
Rotary has played an active part in eradicating polio over 90 percent of the world, but it is not yet conquered. There are still outbreaks, and recently the polio virus was found in wastewater in New York. The need to continue child vaccinations and the support of vaccination programs throughout the world is what will keep polio from ever again becoming the paralyzing, crippling disease many older adults remember from their childhood.
Those wanting to donate can do so through the Holiday Island club by sending a check to Holiday Island Rotary Club, P.O. Box 3204, Holiday Island, AR, 72631 or by going to the Holiday Island Rotary Facebook page and clicking on the “DONATE NOW” button.
