Highlanders fall to Lavaca in first round of regional

Posted

The Eureka Springs Highlanders couldn’t have drawn a tougher opponent in the first round of the 2A West regional tournament.

Defending state champion Lavaca, probably the most talented 2A team in the state, was waiting for the Highlanders. And to make matters worse, the Golden Arrows had a score to settle after Eureka Springs beat them at Highlander Arena in the championship game of last season’s regional tournament.

The result was a 62-26 Lavaca victory that ended the Highlanders’ season. But Eureka Springs coach Brian Rambo said the loss didn’t take away from his team’s success this season — especially late in the year as the Highlanders seemed to put things together on the way to a regional appearance.

“Lavaca’s really athletic and they play extremely hard,” he said. “And we got in massive foul trouble that really changed the complexity of the game. But that doesn’t really define how our season went in terms of the success we had. So I was very proud of my bunch for sure.”
