The sound of the referee’s whistle, the cheerleader chants and the crowd cheering on the Bobcats all go together with the sound of the Berryville High School Marching Band.
Though the sounds of the Friday night football games have come to an end, the Berryville marching band continues to celebrate a very successful competitive season.
The band starts preparation in late July to compete at the highest level throughout the state. This year’s competition show was titled “Soldier, Poet, King.”This concept was presented to the band directors, Doug and Tonya Blevins, by student leaders and comes from a popular trend on the social media app TikTok. Users are asked to take a short quiz and then the individual is given the label of a soldier, a poet or a king.
“Many people don’t know the story originates from the Bible and King David,” Tonya Blevins said. “The moral we tried to portray is that the best leaders in society contain characteristics of all three — a soldier, a poet and a king.”
This year the band earned top honors in Charleston and Waldron for their show design, marching, music, color guard, percussion and drum major. The band qualified for the State marching contest by earning straight superior ratings at the regional competition held in Rogers. The band attended the State marching competition at War Memorial Stadium in Little Rock where they earned a high “Excellent” rating and ranked eighth out of 23 bands that participated in class 4A.
“We are very proud of the students and their work ethic” said Doug Blevins. The band members now prepare for concert season, where they will present a Christmas concert at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 28, in the Performing Arts Center at Berryville High school. They won’t compete again until March where they will play in the regional concert band competition in hopes of qualifying for another appearance at State in April.
Until then, you can still catch the sounds of the marching band at the Berryville Christmas Parade and at home varsity basketball games in January and February.
