With 0.5 seconds left in a tie game, Berryville junior CT Hicks calmly stepped to the free-throw line on Pea Ridge’s home court.
Twenty-four hours earlier, Berryville had already delivered one dramatic finish on the same floor.
Hicks made the first of two free throws and intentionally missed the second to let the clock expire, giving Berryville a 56-55 victory in its regular-season finale on Friday, Feb. 13.
The night before, Berryville freshman Carson Compton — the coach’s son — sank the second of two free throws with 1.5 seconds remaining in overtime to lift the Bobcats to a 43-42 win over Shiloh Christian in the championship game of the junior high district tournament.
Both game-winning free throws went through the same basket.
“That was pretty cool,” Brent Compton said. “And we thought of that while it was happening. We were just thankful that we made those shots in both those games.”
The victory over Pea Ridge sends the Bobcats into this week’s district tournament on a four-game winning streak. Berryville (22-8, 10-4 4A-1) is seeded third and will play at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 17, against the winner of Monday night’s game between Huntsville and Green Forest. The district is being played on Shiloh Christian’s home floor in Springdale.
Tuesday night’s winner will advance to the district semifinals and clinch a spot in next week’s regional tournament at Prairie Grove.
“Our kids are going to be focused,” Compton said. “There’s a lot riding on this game. You win and you keep playing or you go home. It’s just a real pressure-packed game. Hopefully our kids don’t feel it and we play well and punch our ticket to the regional.”
In the victory over Pea Ridge, Berryville led by five points — 40-35 — going into the fourth quarter before the Blackhawks fought back to tie the score. Hicks scored 11 of his team-high 17 points in the second half. Classmate John Butler added 12 points for Berryville, with senior Noah Houghton scoring 10.
On Tuesday, Feb. 10, Berryville won 63-32 at Gentry as Butler scored 14 points to lead four Bobcats in double figures. Junior Carson McMellon made three three-pointers and scored 13 points for Berryville, while senior Peyton Smith added 11 and Hicks scored 10.
