Hall of Fame to honor top athletes from Berryville High School

Posted

The Berryville School District will be honoring some of the distinguished athletes and coaches from Berryville High School history starting in the fall of 2024 with the creation of the Berryville Athletics Hall of Fame.

The school district’s board of directors approved the project at its April meeting and fundraising is underway for an endowment that will support the hall of fame.

Berryville athletic director Brent Compton, also the longtime boys basketball coach at Berryville High School, said the project has been in the works for a while.

“We’ve been working on it for a while and we’re finally putting it together,” Compton said.

Plans call for the first class of inductees to include five members, who will be recognized at the first home football game this fall. Festivities would also include a pancake breakfast the next morning as well as an official induction banquet.

“We’re still planning it out,” Compton said. “We’ve had a meeting about it and we’re going to have another one to get it all ironed out. It’s something that we think is important. We have a lot of people that have done a lot of great things here at Berryville, and we want to recognize that.”

The Hall of Fame could also provide motivation for current BHS athletes, Compton said.

“We want our athletes to know, this could be you one day,” he said.

Dean Lee, the city of Berryville’s economic development director and a former Bobcat athlete, is leading the fundraising effort. Lee said the goal was to find 25 donors willing to give $1,000 apiece to establish the endowment.
