The Eureka Springs Highlanders suffered their first conference loss in more than a year on Friday, Dec. 9, losing 35-34 at Greenland.
“It’s always a struggle on the road,” said Eureka Springs coach Brian Rambo, whose team went undefeated in conference play and then won the district and regional tournament titles as well last season. “Teams tend to play better at home. They feel more comfortable. They had a good crowd, a good student section, and offensively, we just couldn’t find a way to get enough buckets.”
Rambo said the loss wasn’t caused by a lack of effort on the Highlanders’ part.
“My guys did a great job in terms of guarding and slowing them down and kind of keeping the game close. But in the end, we just couldn’t get it done. There was disappointment in the locker room, obviously, at the end of the game because we expect to win every game. But I think we won 20-something conference games in a row at that point. We’ve had a great run. Our program’s in great shape.”
Senior Dillon Johnson had 16 points and 10 rebounds, while junior Michael Lester added 10 points.
On Tuesday, Dec. 6, Eureka Springs won 64-58 on the road at Haas Hall Academy in Bentonville. Johnson had 24 points and nine rebounds while Lester had 20 points and four rebounds.
Eureka Springs has two home games this week, against Life Way Christian on Tuesday and Yellville- Summit on Friday.
