Greenland pulls away from Tigers in 2nd half

Green Forest coach Greg Tibbitt offered a succinct summation of the Tigers’ 42-18 loss at Greenland on Friday, Sept. 20.

“We just didn’t play well,” Tibbitt said. “We just didn’t play well, on either side of the ball. A lot of mistakes. … We couldn’t get out of our own way.”

Still, the Tigers (1-2) were in the game for most of the first half, trailing just 21-18 after Jonathan Rivera’s 11-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. Greenland answered with a touchdown to go up 28-18 at halftime, but Tibbitt said the Tigers were still in decent shape at that point.

“We’re only down 10,” he said. “So we’re OK. We played horrible and we’re still in it.”

The Tigers, who beat Greenland 56-52 last season, couldn’t move the ball on their first possession of the second half then the Pirates got the ball inside the Green Forest 30 after a short punt and scored on a touchdown pass. Later in the third quarter, another short put gave Greenland possession inside the Tigers’ 10 and set up another Pirates touchdown.

Greenland scored on its first two possessions of the game to go up 14-0. Green Forest answered with a 35yard touchdown pass from Mason Meador to Brityn Gilliam before another Greenland TD made it 21--6. Tigers sophomore Ywa Hay Moo returned the ensuing kickoff 78 yards for a touchdown to pull Green Forest closer at 21-12.

“I felt like we were the better team, but it did not show at all,” Tibbitt said. “They executed really well. We didn’t execute, once again, on either side of the ball.”

Green Forest opens conference play this week, traveling to face a Prairie Grove team returning to the 4A-1 after spending the past two seasons in Class 5A. Before moving up, Prairie Grove (2-1) had been a perennial conference powerhouse under longtime coach Danny Abshier.

“They’re like a machine on offense,” Tibbitt said. “It’s Wing-T football at its finest. You could watch video and go do a Wing-T clinic watching them play. Defensively, just really sound. They’re just solid. They’re just a good football team.”

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. in Prairie Grove.
