Green Forest set to kick off 2024 season at Hollister

Posted

High school football is here, and it’s game week in Green Forest for a Tigers team that’s looking to improve its fortunes and build on their first fourt-win season in a decade.

Green Forest opens its 2024 season on Friday night, Aug. 30, on the road at Hollister, Mo. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Hollister finished 0-10 last season, but Tibbitt said that team was “very sophomore- oriented.”

“They’re a Wing-T team,” Tibbitt said. “They’ve got a big junior class, not a lot of seniors. They’ve got a really good running back (junior KK Conway). He’s as good as anybody we’ll see all year. So it’ll be a good game getting us started this year.”

The Tigers have more depth than they have in recent seasons, and although there are only 11 seniors on the roster, Green Forest returns several starters on both sides of the ball. Most prominent among those is senior fullback Ridge Gordon- Swofford, the Tigers’ offensive bellcow for the past two seasons.

Gordon-Swofford ran for more than 1,100 yards and 14 touchdowns last season and also had two touchdown receptions.

A physical, hard-nosed runner, Gordon-Swofford will be complemented by tailbacks Gabe Serna and Ywa Hay Moo. Serna ran for nearly 400 yards last season and also can play receiver. Moo won four events at the junior high district track and field meet in April and gives the Tigers a big-play threat anytime he touches the ball.

Green Forest will also be a threat to throw the football this fall with the emergence of senior quarterback Mason Meador. Meador started most of last season for the Tigers, but Tibbitt said he’s shown big improvement heading into this season.

“Everybody knows our offense is going to go through Ridge,” Tibbitt said. “But Mason’s really grasping the offense and allowing us to do some things on the perimeter and throw the ball and kind of spread it around a little bit. If we can get some stops defensively and steal some possessions here and there and try to control the clock with our offense, we feel pretty strong about it right now.”

Green Forest held an intrasquad scrimmage on Friday, Aug. 23, and Tibbitt said he was especially pleased to see the defense perform well.

“Those guys are playing really fast,” Tibbitt said. “Even if they make a mistake, they’re making it 100 miles an hour. So I hope we continue to play that well.”
