Green Forest preps for season kickoff

Posted

The Green Forest Tigers haven’t shied away from tough competition all summer, and that didn’t change when it was time for the Tigers’ preseason scrimmage.

Green Forest traveled to Clarksville on Thursday, Aug. 18, to take on the Class 5A Panthers.

Green Forest coach Greg Tibbitt said the results were mixed for his team.

The teams’ starters matched up for the first part of the scrimmage, then the junior varsities squared off before the starters faced off again to finish the night.

“Our (starters), if you were actually keeping score, it would have been like 29-16,” in favor of Clarksville, Tibbitt said. “We had some good things. Clarksville’s a good football team. I think they’ll be pretty good in that 5A conference this year. They’re big, physical. But we had some good things happen. We played well at times, so I’m pleased with where we are.”

Senior quarterback Isaiah Fraga showed off his speed, breaking loose for a 65-yard touchdown run. Fraga threw a touchdown pass to senior running back Izaak Merida for the Tigers’ other score.

Sophomore Ridge Swofford ran for one two-point conversion and Fraga passed to sophomore Diego Martinez for another.

“I thought we threw the ball better,” Fraga said. “Izaak Merida, Joel Salgado, Braden Epperly all had a couple of catches. I thought there some good things.”

The Tigers’ offensive linemen, who didn’t participate in 7-on-7 competitions this summer, saw their first significant action against an opposing team.

“There are some young guys up front that are getting a lot of playing time,” Tibbitt said. “It was good for them to get in the heat of the battle a little bit.”

All in all, Tibbitt said it was a long night but a good experience for the Tigers.

“We got home about 2:30 this morning,” he said the day after the scrimmage. “We played junior high and then high school, so it made for a long night. But it was good. It’s good to get going and hit somebody besides each other for a while.”

Green Forest will open the 2022 season Friday, hosting West Fork. Green Forest won last season’s matchup 14-7.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
