The Green Forest Tigers repeated themselves at last week’s 3A-1 district cross country championships. Now, they’d love to do it again.
The Tigers successfully defended their district cross country title, led once again by junior Arauny Reyes.
Reyes won the boys individual district race for the second consecutive year, covering the 5,000-meter course in Elkins in a time of 17 minutes, 26.84 seconds. That was nearly 12 seconds faster than Reyes’ winning time in 2022.
Reyes was followed by senior teammate Joseph Duenas, who finished second in 18:11.91. Seniors Sergio Martinez (19:34.04) and Alex Alvarez (19:53.88) finished fifth and sixth, respectively, while freshman Alex Lemus finished 11th (20:21.48) and senior Chris Alvarado was 18th (22:29.14).
Green Forest’s next objective will be defending its Class 3A state championship on Friday, Nov. 3, at Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs. Reyes’ runner-up finish in the individual race led the way as the Tigers placed five runners among the top 22 last year and won their fourth state title in nine years but their first since claiming three consecutive from 2014-2016.
Green Forest’s girls finished third in the district meet, led by a fifth-place individual finish from junior Kayla Lozano (22:58.31). She was followed by freshman Lisbet Rosales (10th, 24:47.06); freshman Paloma Gonzalez (13th, 25:34.19); sophomore Emily Sales (16th, 26:35.78); junior Stephanie Lopez (17th, 26:42.08); freshman Valery Quiroz (18th, 26:59.24); junior Eregly Gaspar (25th, 33:42.25); and junior Elena Quiroz (26th, 34:04.88).
In the junior boys 3,200-meter race, Green Forest eighth-grader Jahdiel Manuel finished fourth in 11:57.80 to lead the Tigers to third place in the team standings. Classmate Jade Campbell was 20th in the junior girls race in 16:31.79. Green Forest finished fourth in the junior girls team standings.
