Nine of the 10 Carroll County justices of the peace who are eligible to seek re-election in 2024 will do so. The 10th, longtime District 9 JP Roger Hall, is not seeking a new term.
The District 9 seat will stay in the Hall family, however, as Roger Hall’s son Aaron is running unopposed for the seat, according to the county clerk’s office.
The filing period for county and school candidates began Monday, Nov. 6, and ended Tuesday, Nov. 14.
The preferential primary will be held March 5, 2024, with the general election scheduled for Nov. 5.
Two incumbent JPs face challengers in 2024, although neither of those races are in the March primary.
District 1 JP Jack Deaton is running as an independent, as is Gerry Ball, who is challenging incumbent JP Harrie Farrow in District 3. Neither Deaton nor Ball’s name will appear on the primary ballot but both will be on the general election ballot in November, pending their certification by the county election commission.

Aaron Hall is running as a Republican. Another Republican, Jon Phillips, had filed as a candidate for the District 9 seat but later withdrew.
District 8 JP Francisco Pedraza, who was appointed to his seat, was ineligible to file as a candidate for 2024. Republican Bobby James is running unopposed for the District 8 seat.
