The Berryville Bobcats opened the 2023 season with a dramatic victory on Friday, Sept. 1, beating West Fork 16-13 on a game-winning field goal by sophomore Andre Esparza as time expired.
“It was pretty surreal,” first-year Berryville coach Macklin Chermak said of winning in his debut with the Bobcats. “In the moment, there was nothing but excitement and adrenalin. Afterwards, for most of the weekend, it was pretty surreal … didn’t know how much of it was actually real. It was pretty awesome.”
West Fork (1-1) scored a quick touchdown to open the game but Berryville answered with a 4-yard touchdown run by Andre Esparza and an 11yard TD by junior quarterback Decimus Ruiz to take a 13-7 halftime lead.
West Fork tied the game at 13 with a third-quarter touchdown and had a chance to take the lead with a successful extra point.
Berryville junior Alex Esparza blocked the kick, however, leaving the score tied.
With 10 seconds left, Berryville missed a potential game-winning kick, but West Fork was called for roughing the kicker. Given a second chance, Berryville converted the 30-yard field goal for the victory.
Andre Esparza ran for 63 yards and a touchdown for the Bobcats. Ruiz had 56 yards and a touchdown on the ground and completed nine of 20 passes for 81 yards.
Berryville will travel to Greenland on Friday.
