Event raises $4,507 for senior center

The City of Berryville has announced that $4,507 was raised for the Carroll County Senior Activity and Wellness Center during the Holiday Open House Fundraiser on Tuesday, Dec. 16, far surpassing the original goal of $1,000.

The evening proved to be both a successful fundraiser and an opportunity to educate the community about the vital role the senior center plays in Carroll County.

When city staff first learned that the senior center was in need of emergency funding, the city recognized that it needed to help by using available community resources. As a nonprofit organization, the senior center is not funded by the city or county and relies on grants and donations to operate. Recently, the center lost several grants it typically depends on, creating an urgent financial need.

The fundraiser also helped educate locals on how the center functions. Many community members were unaware of what the senior center provides, with some believing it was a residential facility, offered the same resources as the community center, or was funded through local government. In reality, the senior center serves as a gathering place for seniors ages 60 and older, offering free membership, social activities, exercise programs, daily lunches, transportation services and oversight of Meals on Wheels for homebound seniors.

Funds raised throughout the evening came from silent auction proceeds, hot cocoa and cookie sales, on-the-spot donations and generous contributions from local businesses. In total, $4,507 was raised in just one evening.

“This fundraiser became about more than just money,” said community engagement director Julia Borkowski. “It was about raising awareness, educating our community, and showing support for a resource that means so much to our seniors. The outpouring of generosity we saw reminds us how strong and caring this community truly is.”

In a news release, the City of Berryville extended its sincere thanks to everyone who attended, donated, volunteered, shared the event, and supported the Carroll County Senior Center.

“The success of the evening highlights the community’s continued commitment to caring for its seniors and supporting essential local resources,” the news release said.
