Elkins strikes fast vs. Bobcats

Posted

The Elkins Elks entered their Oct. 6 game at Berryville’s Bobcat Stadium with a perfect record for the season. They quickly demonstrated why.

Elkins scored five first-quarter touchdowns and went on to beat the Bobcats 62-7.

The highlight for Berryville, which held Homecoming festivities before the game, was a 98-yard fumble return for a touchdown by junior Cooper Summers in the second quarter.

Despite the lopsided score, however, first-year Berryville coach Macklin Chermak saw signs of progress from a young Bobcats team that is still looking for its first conference victory in the rugged 4A-1.

“We did some things better,” Chermak said. “We cleaned up some of the penalties on offense, so it looks a little smoother. There are times when things look really good on defense.

We got to our positions a lot better. We played leverage pretty well. We just struggled finishing, obviously, on both sides of the ball.”

Berryville (2-4, 0-3 4A-1) will travel to Gravette on Friday, Oct. 13. The Lions (33, 2-1) have won their past two games, both on the road, at Lincoln and Huntsville.

“They’re physical and disciplined,” Chermak said. “They’re a tough, physical team on defense. They fly around a bit and do some unorthodox stuff we haven’t really seen too much of. They kind of do a variation of an odd front, so we’ll be adjusting to that a lot this week offensively.”

Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday at Gravette.
