Berryville coach Bryan Hutson said Monday that Elkins “came out and hit us in the face,” in last Friday’s game at Elkins.
The Elks also hit the Bobcats through the air. Elkins quarterback Dizzy Dean passed for 203 yards and five touchdowns as the Elks defeated Berryville 56-7.
“We didn’t show up,” Hutson said. “I guess that’s my fault. I didn’t have them ready to play. We got off the bus and Elkins came out and hit us in the face and we didn’t fight back very much. It just snowballed from there.”
Berryville’s lone touchdown came on a 45-yard third-quarter run by quarterback Decimus Ruiz.
“We didn’t play well in any aspect of the game that I could see,” Hutson said. “Against a good football team, you’re doomed when that happens. That’s my fault for not getting them more ready to play.”
Berryville (1-5, 0-3 4A1) will try to bounce back this week. The Bobcats host Gravette on Friday for Homecoming at Bobcat Stadium. The Lions (3-3, 2-1) are coming off a 4314 win over Huntsville.
“They’re another really, really good football team,” Hutson said. “They played Elkins real close and beat Lincoln. They’re one of the top three or four teams in the conference, so our work is cut out for us again.”
Berryville’s first three conference opponents — Ozark, Gentry and Elkins — are all 3-0 in league play. Gravette is right behind at 2-1.
“The first part of our conference is just brutal,” said Hutson, whose team started five sophomores on offense last week. “It’s just a tough row sometimes when you’re as young as we are.”
