Early voting begins on tax extension

Posted

Early voting will begin Tuesday, May 6, in a special election to determine whether the City of Berryville’s existing 0.5 percent sales and use tax will be extended by 15 years.

The tax is currently set to expire on Sept. 30, 2030. If voters approve the 15-year extension, the tax would remain in place until Sept. 30, 2045.

At Mayor Tim McKinney’s request, the Berryville City Council approved an ordinance to extend the tax at the council’s regular meeting on Feb. 25, but the extension needs voter approval.

McKinney told the city council that extending the tax will allow the city to issue bonds in order to finance various improvement projects. McKinney said Berryville’s sales tax would remain low compared to other cities in Northwest Arkansas.

Early voting will be conducted at the Berryville United Methodist Church at 400 Eureka St. Early voting will be available from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. from Tuesday, May 6, through Friday, May 9, and on Monday, May 12.

Election Day voting will be held from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 13, at Freeman Heights Baptist Church at 522 W. Freeman St. in Berryville.
