Dress rehearsal coming up Friday for Tigers

Posted

The Green Forest Tigers will get their first taste of football this fall on Friday night, hosting the Clarksville Panthers in a scrimmage game at Tiger Stadium.

The Green Forest and Clarksville junior high teams will take the field at 5:30 p.m. with the high school teams following them, at approximately 7 p.m.

The Tigers enter the season hoping to improve on last year’s 1-9 finish. With 13 new starters, including a new quarterback, Green Forest can use all the experience it can get.

Green Forest coach Greg Tibbitt said the Tigers will focus on themselves more than on Clarksville, which is coming off an 0-10 season.

The Panthers, who compete in the 5A West conference, run a Single- Wing offense.

“Clarksville’s kind of hard to prepare for,” Tibbitt said. “They run kind of a weird offense. So, we’re not selling out to what they do but it’s more or less a chance to get a look at us and see where we are.”

Under Tibbitt, the Tigers have traditionally run a Spread offense and emphasized the passing game, but Tibbitt has indicated Green Forest might be more run-oriented this season with the presence of junior running back Ridge Gordon-Swofford.

Gordon- Swofford rushed for more than 700 yards last season while coming off a torn ACL.

The Tigers also could get a boost from sophomore Gabe Serna, a bigplay threat as both a running back and receiver.

Junior Brityn Gilliam is expected to be the Tigers’ starting quarterback.

The left side of Green Forest’s offensive line is solid with junior left tackle Isiah Lopez returning from an injury that cost him most of last season and junior Bradley Davis holding down the left guard spot. Senior Victor Cervantes will play center while sophomore guard Aksel Ochoa and sophomore tackle Luis Bathen look to gain experience on the right side.

Green Forest will open the regular season Friday, Aug. 25, traveling to West Fork.
