Dr. Marilyn Lou Graves

Dr. Marilyn Lou Graves, 81, of Osage, passed away on Tuesday, October 17, 2023, at Hillcrest Home in Harrison.

Marilyn was born on December 16, 1941, in Conner, Arkansas, to Jasper Henry “Bud” and Mattie Clare Walker Combs. She married Bobby Jack Graves on December 18, 1961. Marilyn was a woman of exceptional achievement and unwavering dedication. She graduated from Alpena High School, furthered her education at Arkansas Tech University, where she earned her bachelor’s degree, and continued her academic journey at the University of Arkansas, where she proudly received her doctorate. Marilyn’s passion for education and sports led her to join the physical education department at the College of the Ozarks in 1970. Over the course of more than 40 years, she made significant contributions to the institution in various capacities.

Marilyn was instrumental in the development of the college’s sports programs. She not only established the volleyball program but also coached it for 18 years. In addition, she coached women’s basketball, tennis, and cross country, leaving a lasting impact on her students. Her leadership qualities were evident as she served as Division Chair and later as Dean of the College at College of the Ozarks. She co-chaired the NAIA Men’s basketball championship for 14 years. Dr. Graves retired in 2013, and was inducted into the College of the Ozarks Sports Hall of Fame in 2014. The Marilyn L. Graves gymnasium in the Keeter Athletic Complex was named in honor of her service and leadership at the College of the Ozarks.

Beyond her academic and professional accomplishments, Marilyn had a deep love for farming and horses. She found joy and solace in the serene embrace of nature. She was a member of the Green Forest United Methodist Church, where her kindness and generosity touched the lives of many. Marilyn was preceded in death by her loving husband, Bob; as well as her twin sister, Carolyn Combs; and two brothers, Walker and Gene Combs.

She is survived by two sisters-in-law, Mary Belle Graves Hill of Berryville and Glenna Ruth Trigg Combs of Alpena; numerous nephews and nieces; and other relatives, along with a multitude of friends and former students who cherished her wisdom and guidance.

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, October 21, 2023, at Alpena Cemetery in Alpena. The service will be a reflection of the profound impact Marilyn had on the lives of those she touched. Arrangements are under the direction of Holt Memorial Chapel of Harrison.

The family requests that memorials be made to College of the Ozarks, 100 Opportunity Avenue, Point Lookout, MO 65726. This gesture will honor Marilyn’s commitment to education and her enduring legacy in shaping the future.
