After the Green Forest Tigers defeated the Berryville Bobcats on Nov. 14, Green Forest coach Shane Compton said it was the Tigers’ first victory over the Bobcats in several years.
They didn’t have to wait nearly as long for the next one.
Junior guard Zak Watson scored 23 points to lead three Tigers in double figures as Green Forest outlasted Berryville 73-71 in double overtime to win the consolation championship in the Anstaff Bank Bev Stone Memorial Border Classic on Saturday, Dec. 2, in Omaha.
Green Forest outscored Berryville 18-16 in overtime to avenge a 20-point loss to the Bobcats in the opening game of the tournament on Monday, Nov. 27.
“I think those guys were kind of disappointed in the way they played Monday night,” Shane Compton said. “And I think both teams kind of wanted to prove something. It was a good game. It was a fun game to be a part of.”
Watson scored 12 points in the third and fourth quarters and then had eight points in overtime to lead Green Forest.
The Tigers outrebounded Berryville 32-25 and had a 36-18 advantage in points in the paint.
“Defensively, we didn’t perform well and that probably had a lot to do with them,” Berryville coach Brent Compton said. “We turned the ball over 26 times. The first quarter we didn’t play well. I do commend our kids for how they responded and gave themselves a chance to win. But it just didn’t seem like we got any breaks. Things hardly ever went our way in that game. And credit to Green Forest. They found a way to win.”
Senior guard Hesten Maybee scored 17 points and handed out six assists for Green Forest, while senior Brayden Compton added 14 points and 13 rebounds.
Sophomore Peyton Smith led Berryville with 29 points while senior Dale Nagtalon added 18 points, seven rebounds and seven assists. Sophomore Noah Houghton scored 14 points for the Bobcats.
“They had an opportunity at the end,” Shane Compton said of Berryville. “They had the ball and they just didn’t convert. It felt like every time that we would pull out ahead of them and felt like we were going to open the gap, they would find a way to come back. And every time they needed to hit a big shot, they did.”
In the two teams’ first meeting in the Omaha tournament, Berryville made 12 three-pointers in 21 attempts and broke the game open by outscoring Green Forest 24-12 in the third quarter to open up a 57-38 lead.
Smith led the Bobcats with 26 points, including four three-pointers, while Nagtalon made five three-pointers and scored 23 points.
“We jumped on ’em early and played well,” Brent Compton said. “We started and finished well in that game.”
“Defensively, there wasn’t a whole lot of energy,” Shane Compton said. “We changed up some stuff that we did defensively. I think that really helped us in the last couple of games that we played.”
With three meetings already this season, the Tigers and Bobcats could cross paths again.
Both teams are playing in this week’s 67th Annual Green Forest Holiday Tournament, sponsored by Anstaff Bank. Green Forest took on Huntsville on Monday night, while Berryville went against Kingston.
Green Forest also will play in the 14th Annual CS Bank Holiday Hoops Tournament from Dec. 27-29 in Berryville.
