Degree of difficulty increases for GFHS teams

Green Forest High School’s athletic program produced some outstanding results during the 2023-2024 school year. Now, the Tigers are gearing up for a bigger challenge.

Green Forest won Class 3A state championships in boys cross country and boys soccer during the recently completed academic year, and sophomore Lydia Russell won four state titles at the Class 3A track and field championships. They’ll all have one chance and one chance only to defend those titles in Class 3A.

On Friday, June 9, the Arkansas Activities Association announced classification numbers for the 202426 cycle. Among the changes from the current cycle: Green Forest, which currently competes in Class 4A in football only, will move up to 4A in all sports.

Green Forest football coach and athletic director Greg Tibbitt said school officials weren’t surprised at the news.

“We were kind of expecting it,” Tibbitt said Monday. “Us and Cave City were tied as the largest schools in 3A and we’re growing.”

Tibbitt said the transition may be more difficult in some sports than others.

“Some sports, there’s a huge difference in classifications,” Tibbitt said. “But some of them, not as much. I think we’ll be OK.”
