The Green Forest Lady Tigers are taking a step up in class this fall, but coach Carley Smith said her team held its own over the summer and will try to play to its strengths in Class 4A.
“We went to team camp last week in Branson and faced some pretty big schools from northeast Arkansas,” Smith said Friday, Aug. 9. “Being at Green Forest we don’t have tall girls, so we’ve really been cracking down on our defense.”
Smith said opposing coaches complimented the Lady Tigers at summer competition.
“When people play Green Forest, they don’t really expect us to be as competitive as we’re looking,” Smith said. “We heard a lot of good things and feedback from other coaches saying our defense was looking really good. That’s something we’ve worked on this summer, just because we know we’re not as big on offense but we’re getting there day by day.”
The Lady Tigers have only two seniors, Anslee Bailey and Kayla Lozano.
Smith said Green Forest hopes to emphasize its strengths this season.
“We’re definitely going to create friction in our defense, because that’s what our strong suit is right right now,” she said. “And hopefully our offense can catch up with that. I’m so proud of how these girls have been working.”
Green Forest will open the season on Aug. 27 at Pea Ridge.
