County recycling pickup halted

Posted

Effective Friday, Nov. 1, Carroll County Solid Waste will no longer offer recycling pickup service in unincorporated areas of the county.

Berryville Mayor Tim McKinney, who serves as chairman of the board of directors for the Carroll County Solid Waste District, said the move is necessary for financial reasons. McKinney said not enough customers outside the city limits of Alpena, Berryville, Eureka Springs, Green Forest and Holiday Island use the recycling service to make it economically feasible. Recycling pickup will continue inside those city limits.

“We have franchise agreements in place with all the cities that includes the recycling,” McKinney said Thursday, Oct. 10. “Carroll County Solid Waste has lost money since COVID.

We can’t hire drivers. We’re just looking at the whole operation, and only 31 percent of our rural customers are using the recycling service. Of course, it’s free. We’re not charging for it. It doesn’t make a difference on your bill, but it just doesn’t make any sense environmentally or economically to drive a diesel truck getting 10 miles a gallon down the road five miles to pick up three recycling bins.”

Residents in unincorporated areas of the county can keep their recycling bins and drop off recyclables at Carroll County Solid Waste’s drop-off centers in Berryville, Eureka Springs and Green Forest.

“We’re hoping that those wanting to recycle will continue to use those centers,” McKinney said.
