Council candidates throw their hats in ring

A total of 16 candidates have filed to run for election to city council seats throughout Carroll County in the Nov. 5 general election.

The filing period for municipal candidates opened on Wednesday, July 31, and will continue through noon Wednesday, Aug. 7.

As of the close of business on Friday, Aug. 2, incumbent Ashley Sharp was the only candidate to file for a seat on the Berryville City Council. Meanwhile, Green Forest City Council incumbents Odra De-Leon and Carroll Smith had filed, as had Eureka Springs incumbents David Avanzino, Susane Gruning, Steve Holifield and Harry Meyer. In Holiday Island, incumbent council members Lynn Dumas, Barbara Kuhn, Sharon Lawlor and Kenneth Mills all had filed as of close of business on Friday, as had incumbent recorder/ treasurer Wesley Stille.

Ralph Goodman, Tim Kilby, Wes Lakin, Billie R. Padgett and Dawn Wolfinbarger had filed as candidates for the Beaver City Council.

Gene Chafin had filed as a candidate for a seat on the Carroll Boone Water District board of directors.

Municipal candidates must file their completed paperwork at the Carroll County clerk’s office in the Eastern District Courthouse in Berryville.

After filing, all of the candidates will have to be certified by their respective cities, who will then notify the county clerk’s office.

The Carroll County Board of Election Commissioners will meet at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 16, for the certification of candidates.

Individuals who want to vote in the Nov. 5 general election may register through Oct. 7. Carroll County Clerk Connie Doss said the clerk’s office will have representatives at the Carroll County Fair in August and Green Forest’s Agriculture Appreciation Days in September who can assist with voter registration as well as updating voter information.
