In Florida, major league pitchers and catchers will report to spring camp in two weeks. Here in Carroll County, planning for recreational league baseball and softball teams is already under way.
A core group of coaches met Jan. 26 to plan for a successful season. Everyone agreed on the importance of an early start to the season, to allow plenty of practice time before games begin. An early start to the season would also allow completing the schedule before the worst summer heat arrives.
Last year, a shortage of coaches meant that some teams ended up with too many players. To ensure a quality experience for kids, registrations will be limited by the number of coaches. Berryville Parks and Rec director Renee Allison said, “We know there are a lot of parents willing to work with a group of kids, but some of them are reluctant, especially if they’ve never coached youth sports before.”
This year, new coaches will have some resources to help them hold productive practices and keep kids engaged.
Those interested in umpiring games will also have more support, in training and on the field.
“This a great job for a high school student, or for a retiree, and they shouldn’t have to take abuse from coaches, players or fans,” Allison said.
Registration for players will open soon, and registrations will be taken online. Parents of very young players are encouraged to sign up early, because preseason clinics to teach basic skills are currently under discussion. Anyone interested in coaching or umpiring can email Allison at renee@berryville.com, or call 4233139.
