City Council OKs ordinance vacating easements

Posted

The Berryville City Council gave final approval at its regular meeting on Tuesday, May 16, to an ordinance vacating undeveloped alleyway easements within and abutting city-owned property at the future site of a new Berryville public library.

The council approved the second and third readings of the ordinance by title only. The first reading was approved at the council’s May 2 meeting, with Mayor Tim McKinney telling the council that the easements have never been developed or used.

The city has agreed to donate the land across from the city pool for the new library, which is the subject of an ongoing fundraising campaign. Mayoral assistant Jay Lee said at the May 2 meeting that vacating and abandoning the easements is the first step toward transferring the deed to the library.

Also at the May 16 meeting, the council approved a resolution setting a date for a public hearing on a petition filed by Tyson Foods requesting that the city abandon and vacate a portion of Miller Street. Tyson owns the property abutting the portion of Miller Street that the company is asking the city to vacate. The council will hold the public hearing at 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 6, immediately preceding its next regular meeting.

In other business at the May 16 meeting, the council approved closing a portion of Spring Street for a Classic Car Cruise-In during the annual Ice Cream Social, which begins Friday, June 9, on the Berryville Square.
