City condemns house damaged in fire

Posted

The Berryville City Council voted at its regular meeting on Tuesday, April 2, to condemn a house that suffered extensive damage during a recent fire.

The house, located at 205 Douglas St., was heavily damaged in a fire on the night of March 16. Mayor Tim McKinney told council members that the house has been “an issue” for several years.

“We have a history of about five years with that house,” McKinney said. “It hasn’t had electricity or water and it’s … yeah, it’s time to go.”

The council voted 4-0 to approve a resolution declaring the house a nuisance and condemn it. The resolution identifies the owner of the house as Jason T. Henry of Berryville. The measure stipulates that if the house has not been torn down and removed or if the violations have not been resolved, the city will take steps to demolish and remove it. The costs associated with that action, along with a fine of $50 per day, would then be imposed as a lien on the property.

In other business at the April 2 meeting, the council heard a presentation from Dean Lee and Rodney Ballance of the Carroll County Collaborative regarding the state’s efforts to expand broadband access to areas that currently are unserved or underserved.

Both encouraged residents to visit the state’s broadband map at broadband.arkansas. gov to check their designation in regard to eligibility for grant funding to an internet service provider to establish broadband access at their location. Residents who disagree with their assigned designation may challenge it by conducting speed tests to verify their service speeds.

The deadline to challenge is Friday, April 19.
