As Macklin Chermak gets set to make his debut as head coach of the Berryville Bobcats, he says it’s normal to be a little nervous.
“I’m feeling a few jitters, a few butterflies,” Chermak said Monday, four days before the Bobcats open the 2023 season at home against West Fork on Friday. “I’d be worried if I wasn’t.”
While Berryville will be playing its first game of the season, West Fork opened its 2023 season last week with a 20-8 victory over Green Forest. West Fork defeated Berryville 28-6 last season.
“They’re like a lot of 3A schools,” Chermak said. “They’re wellcoached. They do a little to get a lot done. So, preparing for it shouldn’t be too difficult but stopping ’em’s a different story. When you do a little bit, you can do it well. That’s kind of where we’re at, too. We’re just trying to get a little in before we start expanding on it. Their program’s a little more established, a little more built. Their kids will probably be a little further along in that program and that coaching system. But I think the philosophies are pretty similar.”
Chermak said Berryville’s players are eager to get the season started.
“They’re psyched to start game week,” he said. “They’re ready to get out there and start preparing for teams and get going.”
Berryville will play 10 consecutive weeks without an off date.
“It’s pedal down, all the way,” Chermak said.
Friday’s kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Bobcat Stadium.
