BV schools break ground on outdoor classroom

Posted

If all goes as planned, students at Berryville High School will have an opportunity to have class outdoors this spring.

At its Nov. 14 regular meeting, the Berryville School Board heard an update that groundbreaking has finally arrived for the school’s outdoor “classroom.”

“We’re finally getting to break ground on our high school outdoor classroom, and that’s been in the works for over a year,” Berryville Superintendent Owen Powell said. “Things were just backed up like materials and labor and everything, so we’re just now breaking ground. But it’s really good to see that project get going.”

Powell said the metal structure will sit directly west of the high school.

“It will be an outdoor classroom for our students and will also serve as a pavilion,” he said. “It’ll be 50by-50 in size and will be a place where students can go outdoors and have a place to congregate.

“Teachers will be able to go out and do an outdoor lesson if they’d like to.”

Powell said, weather permitting, he thinks the project can be complete “in a few months.”

“Hopefully we’ll be able to get out there and use it [in the spring],” he said.

C4 UPDATE

The board also got an update about the Connect 4 program that serves students in Berryville along with other Carroll County schools.

The C4 program teaches career and technical education to students in the county and is as popular as ever, Powell said.

“We’re at an all-time high as far as numbers,” he said. “We’re seeing a lot of good growth in the program and our students are graduating from the program and going out and getting really good jobs, really good-paying jobs.”

Powell said the board heard how numerous students are taking what they’re learning in C4 and starting their own businesses.

“We’re just really proud of the program and excited about it,” he said.

BOARD ACTIONS

In actions by the board, a new web-based program for special education was approved. Sped Track will replace the program Script, Powell said.

The board also approved fundraisers by the third-grade classes, Key Club, wrestling program, Drama Club and Bright Futures.

Out-of-state travel was approved for third-grade classes to travel to WonderWorks in Branson.

The board unanimously approved the resignations of elementary teacher Tracy Holle and cafeteria employee Alice Smith, while hiring Mae Scarrow (custodial substitute), Kelley Deatherage (special education bus aide substitute) and Sydney Griswold (purchase service contract).

The school board’s next meeting will be Monday, Dec. 12 to accommodate Christmas break.
