Bonnie June Westphal, known affectionately as June to her friends and family, passed away Saturday, December 16, 2023, at the age of 85. Born on July 19, 1938, to Glen and Lena (Worley) Johnson in the picturesque town of Eureka Springs, Arkansas, June grew up surrounded by the natural beauty and rich history that would come to shape her life’s passion.

June was a woman of exceptional intelligence, whose interest in historical fact-finding was not just a hobby, but a calling. She spent her professional career as a dedicated historian, illuminating the past for others with her keen insights and tireless research. Her work was more than a job; it was a testament to her belief in the importance of understanding our roots to build a better future. She shared her knowledge generously, captivating all who had the pleasure of learning from her with interesting stories and facts that brought history to life.

June was a beloved figure in our community. Her involvement on various boards including the Eureka Springs Historical Museum, Carroll County Historical and Gen Society, Eureka Springs Cemetery Board, Eureka Springs Library Board, United Methodist Women, United Methodist Church Choir, and the Writers Colony reflected her commitment.

She is survived by her son, David Westphal and his wife Kim; grandsons, Keith Westphal and his wife Hannah, and Kurtis Westphal; great-granddaughter, Elsie June Westphal; sister, Wanda Tirey; brother, Joe Johnson and his wife Izell; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends who will feel the absence of her interesting conversations.

On December 3, 1961, June married the love of her life, Allison (Al) T. Westphal whom preceded her in death on October 21, 1999. Also preceding are her parents, Glen and Lena Johnson; brothers, Floyd, Wayne, Jewell, Glen Jr., and Bill Johnson; and sister, Lucy Fern Kell.

As we say goodbye to June we celebrate a life welllived. Her contributions to the field of history and to the hearts of those she knew will endure. She has left us with a treasure trove of memories and knowledge that will continue to inspire and educate. June’s life reminds us to cherish our history and to nurture our relationships with others.

A private family service will be held at a later date.
