The Berryville Bobcats outscored Green Forest 11-3 to open the game and went on to a 57-37 victory over the Tigers in a 4A-1 conference game on Tuesday, Feb. 4, at Bobcat Arena.
Junior guard Peyton Smith set the tone for the Bobcats early, scoring nine of those first 11 points on a trio of three-pointers. Smith had 11 points in the first quarter and finished with a game-high 20.
After leading 16-7 at the end of the first quarter, Berryville pushed its lead to 13 points on a three-pointer by sophomore Carson McMellon that made it 20-7 with 7:18 left in the second quarter.
Green Forest got within 10 when sophomore Collin Atchison dropped in a three-pointer, but Smith drove for a basket, then sophomore CT Hicks scored off a pass from Smith after sophomore John Butler dove for a loose ball to make it 2915 with 3:16 left in the first half.
After Green Forest missed two free throws at the 2:49 mark, Berryville sophomore Mason Zogleman hit a three-pointer to push Berryville’s lead to 3215 with 1:41 left in the half.
The Bobcats led 4123 after sophomore Hudson Norris made two free throws with 2:42 remaining in the third quarter. Green Forest closed the quarter with a 7-0 run, capped with a fast-break layup from senior Brityn Gilliam, to cut Berryville’s lead to 41-30.
The Bobcats responded, however, with an 11-0 spurt to start the fourth quarter. McMellon started that run with back-to-back three pointers within a 30-second span. Norris followed with a three of his own before Smith dropped in a pair of free throws for a 52-30 Berryville lead with 5:25 remaining.
McMellon hit three second-half three pointers and finished with 12 points for Berryville. Senior Zak Watson led Green Forest with 12 while Atchison added 10.
On Friday, Feb. 7, Berryville lost 64-49 at Huntsville. Smith scored 20 for the Bobcats in that game. That same night, Gravette defeated Green Forest 56-45 at the Grim Gym.
Each team has two regular-season games remaining. Berryville is set to host Gentry on Tuesday, Feb. 11, and Pea Ridge on Friday, Feb. 14.
Green Forest finishes the regular season at home against Prairie Grove on Tuesday, Feb. 11, and on the road against Shiloh Christian in Springdale on Friday, Feb. 14.
The district tournament is set to begin Monday, Feb. 17, in Huntsville.
Despite an up-anddown season with four sophomores in the starting lineup, Berryville coach Brent Compton said the Bobcats have the potential to step up in the postseason.
“I really think we’re that team that nobody wants to play,” Compton said Monday, Feb. 10. “Because we’ve shown that flash here and there that we can beat anybody. I really believe that.”
